MNRE to provide ₹858 crore for Phase-I of Bioenergy Program

New Delhi: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy on Monday said it will continue the National Bio-Energy Program with a budget outlay from FY 2022-26. 858 crore for the first phase.

“The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India has notified the National Bio-Energy Program on 2nd November, 2022. MNRE continues the National Bio-Energy Program for the period from FY 2021-22 to 2025-26 ,” said a statement from the ministry.

“The program has been recommended to be implemented in two phases. Phase-I of the program has been approved with budget outlay 858 crores,” it added.

The National Bio-Energy Program will consist of three sub-schemes: the Waste to Energy Program, the Biomass Program and the Biogas Program.

The Waste to Energy Scheme (on energy from urban, industrial and agricultural wastes/residues) will assist in setting up power projects from large biogas, bioCNG and power plants (MSW (excluding municipal solid waste).

Biomass Program (Scheme for manufacturing of briquettes and pellets in industries and promotion of biomass (non-bagasse) based co-generation) Supporting installation of pellets and briquettes for use in power generation and non-bagasse-based power generation projects Will do

Biogas program will also assist in setting up of household and medium sized biogas units in rural areas.

In order to utilize the vast surplus biomass available in the country, cattle dung, industrial and urban bio-waste for energy recovery, MNRE has been promoting bio-energy in India since the 1980s.

One of the major assistance provided by MNRE is the central financial assistance provided for setting up bioenergy projects such as biogas, bioCNG, urban, industrial and agricultural waste/residues to reduce their capital cost/interest on loan, Hence increasing the project viability.
