Mobile internet service suspended across Rajasthan to avoid communal tension

The Rajasthan government on Tuesday imposed prohibitory orders and suspended mobile internet services across the state in the wake of communal tension following the murder of a tailor in Udaipur.

Chief Secretary Usha Sharma directed to suspend the officers mobile Internet Enforce Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in all the districts of the state for 24 hours service across the state and for a month – prohibiting assembly of more than four people.

Leaves of police and administration officials have also been cancelled. Sharma chaired a high level meeting with senior officials including Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Abhay Kumar, Director General of Police ML Lather and others to review the situation.

“The Chief Secretary has directed all the Divisional Commissioners, Inspector Generals of Police and District Collectors to keep a special vigil across the state,” an official statement said.

Security measures have been taken in the wake of the killing of a person in Udaipur district. The killers posted three videos online confessing to the crime and were soon arrested.

Indirectly, the attackers also referred to Nupur Sharma, a BJP leader suspended from the party for a remark on Prophet Mohammad.

Sharma directed all divisional commissioners to stop the dissemination of videos of the incident and take action against those sharing them, the release said.

He said that religious leaders should be appealed to cooperate in maintaining communal harmony and peace.

Earlier, curfew was imposed in seven police station areas of Udaipur from 8 pm on Tuesday till further orders.

Meanwhile, two Additional Director Generals of Police, a Deputy Inspector General of Police, a Superintendent of Police, 30 officers of Rajasthan Police Service and 5 Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) companies have been sent to Udaipur. Kanhaiya Lal was recently arrested by the local police over some comments made by him on social media.
