Gadag: The Gadag District Hospital, maintained by Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences, (Jims) is again in the news for all the wrong reasons. Now the cases of mobile phone theft are increasing in the hospital. Earlier, the hospital was infamous for using stretchers and wheelchairs to move and dump waste. There is no protection of valuables or belongings of patients and attendants.
Some miscreants are targeting labor and other wards to steal mobile phones and cash.
Basayya Nandikolmath, President Praja Parivartan Vedike, a forum told STOI that people are afraid to go to GIMS as their valuables are not properly protected. “There are many poor people taking admission here. If they lose their mobile or other property, it will be a big loss for them,” he said.
“Every day 10-15 mobiles are stolen from the labor ward alone. In the last two days, more than 120 mobiles have been stolen from the hospital. Though there are several CCTV cameras in the premises, the hospital authorities have failed to stop these thefts. It seems that most of the CCTVs are faulty and should be investigated. Not only this, there is also negligence of the security personnel. A proper inquiry should be ordered on this issue as we suspect that some hospital staff are involved in these thefts. He said there are not enough security guards to keep an eye on the visitors.
The attendant of a patient who lost a mobile phone said, “We are now concerned that if such theft is not curbed immediately, miscreants may start stealing newborn babies. The hospital should increase security and monitor visitors regularly.
GIMS Director Dr Rekha Sonawane He said, “We do not have government approved security personnel as the government has not yet given approval to appoint security guards or outsource security work to any agency. Now we are providing Group D employees as security in the hospital. are deployed.
“We have already registered a case with Gadag rural police regarding mobile theft in the hospital and will also hold a meeting with the hospital staff on Monday to enhance security measures. I have already sent a notice to the hospital superintendent seeking clarification on the increasing cases of mobile theft in the hospital,” she said.
“I’ll talk soon Gadag SP and asked senior officials to increase security at the hospital,” she assured.
