Mocha: The first cyclonic storm of 2023 is likely to form in the Bay of Bengal

The weather office on Wednesday said it has picked up early indications of a cyclone in the southeast Bay of Bengal and warned fishermen and the shipping community against venturing into the area.

India Meteorological Department Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that a cyclone is likely to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal on May 9 and its path will be predicted over the next few days.

On its intensification into a cyclonic storm, the system will be named cyclone mocha, recommended by Yemen, and originates from the Yemeni city of Mocha (or Mokha) on the Red Sea coast. Long known for its coffee trade, the port city also gave its name to the famous mocha coffee.

The naming of this cyclone was done in accordance with the mandate issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which states that each cyclone should be named to avoid confusion in instances where multiple systems operate at one location. Are.

Odisha government’s special relief commissioner Satyavrat Sahoo said on Wednesday that the Odisha government has already put collectors of 18 coastal and adjoining districts and officials of 11 departments on alert.

Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said there is no need to panic, adding the information about the cyclone is aimed at updating fishermen, oil explorers or any other commercial operations going on in the Bay of Bengal.

However, all cyclone prone districts have been kept prepared. Districts and concerned departments along with NDRF, ODRAF and others are prepared for any possible eventuality.
