Modi to inaugurate 11 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 11 new government medical colleges across Tamil Nadu and the new campus of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil in Chennai via video conferencing on Wednesday.

New medical colleges are being set up at an estimated cost of approx. 4000 crores. The central government has provided 2145 crores for the project, the rest is funded by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

New medical colleges are being set up in Virudhunagar, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Tiruvallur, Nagapattinam, Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Ramanathapuram and Krishnagiri districts of the state. The establishment of these medical colleges is in line with the Prime Minister’s constant endeavor to promote affordable medical education and improve health infrastructure in all parts of the country.

The new Medical Colleges with a cumulative capacity of 1450 seats are covered under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of ‘Establishment of New Medical Colleges attached to the existing District/ Referral Hospital’. Under this scheme, medical colleges are established in those districts which neither have government or private medical colleges.

The new campus of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT) in Chennai is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of protecting and preserving Indian heritage and promoting classical languages. The new campus is fully funded by the Central Government and has been built at a cost of 24 crores.

The CICT, which was operating from a rented building till now, will now operate from the new 3-storey complex. The new campus is equipped with a huge library, an e-library, seminar hall and a multimedia hall.
