Monsoon rains kill 147 in Pakistan in less than a month – Times of India

Karachi, Pakistan: The death toll in rain-related incidents has risen to 147 in the last one month as monsoon rains continue. PakistanOfficials said flash floods have occurred in some parts of the country.
National Disaster Management Authority Said that 88 of the dead so far are women and children. Monsoon rains also damaged homes, roads, bridges and power stations across the country.
The situation was particularly dire in the major southern port city. Karachi, the country’s largest, where entire neighborhoods were submerged on Monday, leaving commuters stranded in places or attempting to get into knee-deep water on foot or on bicycles. Some residents arranged boats to take them to safer places.
Abdul Rahim, a resident, said, “At the moment, the situation is that we need to travel by boat instead of vehicles as the roads are flooded.”
Other residents of Karachi said they were forced to leave their cars on submerged roads and walk on waist-deep water. Authorities called in paramilitary forces to drain water from the flooded roads and help with the evacuation efforts.
The rains are said to be almost twice as heavy as the average rainfall at this time of year. They began in mid-June, initially wreaking havoc in southwestern Balochistan province, where 63 people have died so far.
