MOOCs to rescue students suffering learning loss due to school closures – Times of India

National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) aims to strengthen the academic base of the students through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) available on SWAYAM portal launched in 2017. The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) has recently released a notice. Students studying in CISCE affiliated schools are called to enroll in these MOOC courses.

Speaking to Education Times, Amarendra P Behera, Joint Director, Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET), NCERT, says, “Keeping in view the academic loss of students due to repeated closure of schools due to Covid, We have developed 28 MOOCs for this. Students of class XI and XII will be a digital resource. It will help in preparation for vocational courses as well as their terminal and internal examinations. The online courses are in simple language and designed keeping in mind the NCERT syllabus and textbooks.

These MOOC courses consist of text modules, video modules, assessment questions designed by school, college and university teachers. Students can post their questions, comments and observations on each topic, and clear their doubts with the teachers on the discussion forums.

“Each module of these MOOC courses has assessment questions to assess the progress and level of understanding of the students. Students must attempt these questions to get the certificate. The day students enroll themselves for MOOC courses on Swayam Portal, we start tracking their academic up-gradation. Such a four-quadrant approach is followed for teaching these MOOC courses on the SWAYAM portal, which aims at providing an in-depth knowledge of the subject to the students. ,

Some reference text and video resources related to the courses can also be accessed and viewed by the students for better understanding of the subject. “The students are mentored by teachers from universities, private and government schools,” says Behera.

These free MOOC courses have been developed in a range of disciplines including Accountancy, Business Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, English and Sociology. NCERT is planning to include Humanities, Home Science, Physical Education and Vocational Education soon.
