A Frost & Sullivan report from August last year noted that demand for operating devices via voice commands—via Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple’s Siri—is increasing, with smart home devices compounding 15%. Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) is tipped to grow. in the next five years.

The report said that adoption of smart home devices with voice assistants was about 5% of all devices sold last year, this could increase to 12% by 2024.

Anshika Jain, Senior Research Analyst, Counterpoint Research, said the rise of local Indian languages has been a major driving force behind the new trend. “Google Assistant today supports nine Indian languages, while Alexa also supports Hindi. It is certainly helping to increase the use of voice commands in this area.”

This trend is also increasing with the adoption of smart speakers in India. Jain said that while smart speakers grew 60% year-on-year last year, they are expected to grow 50% this year.

Given that smart speakers serve as remote hubs for all smart devices compatible with voice assistants like Google Assistant or Alexa, the increased adoption is only set to boost the use of voice commands in India – physical remotes instead of control.

However, Jain said the region is still nascent in India.

“At the moment, we are seeing early adopters of smart devices and voice interfaces in India, as most smart devices are still expensive. The Indian market will probably reach a critical point for smart devices in the next three years – around 2025 , as for wearable devices today.”
