by Divya Bhati: The job security of Twitter employees still hangs in the balance. Even after massive firing of Twitter’s global workforce, the Elon Musk-owned firm is yet to lay off employees. On Friday, December 16, Twitter reportedly fired engineers from its infrastructure division. While the number of employees laid off is still unclear, several engineers who lost their jobs received an email stating that their roles are no longer needed at the company.

According to a report in The Information, several Twitter employees who are in Twitter’s infrastructure organization received an official email on Friday evening stating that Twitter has reviewed its workforce and is cutting roles that are no longer necessary. Earlier, Elon Musk reportedly fired Twitter’s head of infrastructure, Nelson Abramson, along with other senior employees of the company. He also fired Allen Rosa, global head of information technology and vice president of information security.

With the recent layoffs since his acquisition of the microblogging site in late October, Musk has cut 75 percent of Twitter’s entire workforce. The social media giant reportedly had a 7,500-strong workforce before the mass firing, which also included the then CEO Parag Agarwal. However, right after closing the deal, Musk laid off more than 2,000 employees and introduced a “hardcore” work culture where employees are required to work long hours.

The total number of employees decreased further after about 1,200 employees filed their resignations after disapproving of Musk’s “hardcore” work style for building Twitter 2.0. Twitter in India reportedly laid off over 200 employees across engineering, sales and marketing and communications teams.

Meanwhile, Musk has started a poll on Twitter asking people whether he should step down as CEO of Twitter. Musk wrote in his tweet, “Should I resign as head of Twitter? I will follow the results of this poll.” So far, about 56 percent of voters have voted yes and asked Musk to step down as CEO. In another tweet, Musk announced that he would be voting for most of the policy changes that are planned for Twitter. “Going forward, there will be a vote on major policy changes. My apologies. This will not happen again,” he wrote in a thread.
