More than 120 houses submerged in Erode district

Over 120 houses located along the banks of the Cauvery river and in the low-lying areas of Bhavani town were flooded as the discharge of surplus into the river from the Stanley reservoir at Mettur here stood at 1.25 lakh cusecs on Wednesday.

At 8 am, the inflow into the reservoir was 1.25 lakh cusecs, while the same quantity was released into the river. While 1.02 lakh cusecs of water was released through the 16-ventu Elise saddle surplus sluice, 23,000 cusecs was released through the power house. The water level is being maintained at its Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 120 ft, while the storage was also maintained at a capacity of 93.4 tmc ft.

In Bhavani, water entered houses in low-lying areas in Kandhan Nagar, Kaveri Nagar, Pasuvesvarar Street and Kaveri Street. A total of 53 families, including 166 persons – 55 men, 69 women and 42 children – were taken to two relief centers in the area.

People said that this is the fourth time in the last one and a half months that they are being taken to the camps. “Once in four years, the river will be in spate for a few days. But, this time, we were in relief centers for more than three weeks in two months”, said a resident. Two-thirds of those affected went to the camps with their belongings, many remained in their homes despite the floods. Some families also moved to the homes of their relatives in the nearby areas. Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) has cut off power supply in the floods to prevent untoward incidents.

Revenue officials were closely monitoring the flow of water in the river and issuing warnings to the people.
