A powerful coastal storm on Wednesday downed trees in the northeastern United States and left more than 600,000 homes without power.
According to the poweroutage.us website, the state of Massachusetts was hardest hit, with 495,000 homes without electricity at 9:00 a.m. (1300 GMT).
The National Weather Service called the situation dangerous and warned of hurricane-type wind and several uprooted trees.
“Travel is not recommended,” said the NWS office in Boston.
Rhode Island was also badly affected, with 96,000 homes without electricity.
The NWS said the situation should improve by the end of the day and that the storm “will advance further tonight.”
It drenched the New York area Monday night and Tuesday with winds of about 100 mph before turning north on Wednesday.
The storm forced the closure of dozens of schools in New England and brought down power lines and branches, with some roads littered with debris.
Local media reported that in Barnstable, Massachusetts police rescued a woman after a tree fell from her car.
In the coastal city of Duxbury, south of Boston, the fire department said it answered 90 calls in 12 hours because of the storm.
