More than 656 tonnes of biomedical waste generated per day during covid: government

Around 656 tonnes of Bio-Medical Waste (BMW) was generated in the year 2020, of which 590 tonnes was collected and treated by Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facilities (CBWTF), the government informed the Lok Sabha.

As per the information furnished by SPCBs/PCCs for the year 2020, 208 Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facilities are operational in the country for the treatment and disposal of Bio-Medical Waste (BMW).

The Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016 stipulates BMW’s source separation into four categories and stipulates category-specific effective technical options such as incineration, auto-claving, microwaving, hydro-claving and chemical disinfection.

The BMWM Rules, 2016 also contain provisions for adoption of new technologies for BMW treatment after verification.

In addition, MoEFCC is also implementing a Central Sector Scheme for providing financial assistance to innovative research projects aimed at managing environment friendly waste including BMW.
