Most Indian employees unaware of health plans, benefits offered: Survey

New Delhi: The coronavirus pandemic has underlined the importance of health insurance among Indians, leading to the emergence of group health insurance plans as a solution to provide affordable health benefits. However, according to a survey, a significant challenge remains: lack of employee awareness about health care plans and their benefits.

This knowledge gap is of concern, as it can result in employees being underinsured and not taking full advantage of their health care plans. It’s not just about insurance coverage, but also access to doctor’s consultations, preventive care, mental health support, fitness plans, and more.

The survey, conducted by Onsurity, a subscription-based employee health benefits provider, is spread across cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Noida, Ghaziabad, Lucknow and Chandigarh. Nearly 90% of the respondents were non-Onsure members.

dangerous lack of awareness

The survey found that 6 in 10 did not know who their employee health benefits provider was, 9 in 10 had employer-provided healthcare coverage, but 2 in 10 were aware of their insurance coverage. I didn’t know. Fewer than 1 in 10 respondents used a healthcare plan provided by their employer to file a health insurance claim. In addition, 84% of respondents only got a health checkup when their doctor recommended it, and 83% of those surveyed did not know whether their health care plan included preventive health checkups, and a similar percentage Was unaware of the benefits his employer-provided health care plan offered.

About 71% of respondents were unsure whether the healthcare plan offered by their employer covered their parents.

Ignorance is not always bliss:

This ignorance can lead to underutilization of preventive care, ignorance about health care benefits, financial vulnerability, and unrealistic expectations from health care plans. Employees often face exorbitant expenses due to lack of awareness, resulting in millions of Indians falling into poverty every year.

Neglecting regular health check-ups often leads to chronic diseases that could have been prevented with early detection and intervention. Despite announcements and reminders, employees struggle to understand the benefits of preventive care.
