Mother-son killed in accident at Namma Metro construction site in Bengaluru

Two people died in an accident at the construction site of Namma Metro in Bengaluru on the morning of 10 January. According to the police, a woman and her child who were traveling on the scooter died at the hospital while her husband and another child are undergoing treatment.

DCP Bhimashankar Guled of Eastern Division told Hindu, “Today at around 10.45 am, the Namma Metro pole fell and hit a bike on which four people were traveling. They are Lohit, his wife Tejaswini and their twin children (a son and a daughter). Tejaswini and son Vihaan were seriously injured and shifted to a private hospital. Unfortunately, Tejaswini and Vihaan died.”

Pillar number 218 of the Namma Metro at Nagawara on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) collapsed in the morning. The incident led to a pile-up of vehicles on the busy Hennur Road.

BMRCL announces compensation, offers to bear treatment of injured

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) Managing Director Anjum Parvez announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the family of the deceased. “BMRCL will cover the entire cost of treatment of the injured persons. Construction work at the site will be closed for two days. What has fallen is a strong structure, not a pillar. It was not a solid structure. It has four ropes, and it looks like one of them is broken. We are asking the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) to provide a report on the incident. We will also get our internal team to investigate the matter. This is the first time something of this magnitude has happened.”

Bengaluru City Traffic Police tweeted: “Metro pillar collapses at ORR near HBR Layout; There is traffic jam at various intersections. Our traffic area officials were present and the traffic will be cleared soon.

Traffic jam was being reported on the ORR after the accident. A local traffic police personnel said, “At one point, traffic piled up till Ramamurthy Nagar as soon as the school buses hit the road.”

Following the incident, motorists complained of heavy traffic in Hennur, Kalyan Nagar, HBR Layout, Nagawara and surrounding areas.

CM sought information from officials

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has sought information from the authorities regarding the accident. He told reporters in Dharwad, “I have sought complete information from the concerned authorities. We will soon announce compensation for the families of the victims.”

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar said that this is the result 40% commission govt in the state. “Work does not have quality.”
