Interacting with villagers in Barsu, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said the government should hold talks with the local people before starting any project.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said the proposed oil refinery at Barsu in coastal Ratnagiri district should be moved to Gujarat and good investment projects from the neighboring state should be brought to Maharashtra.

Interacting with villagers in Barsu, Thackeray said the government should talk to the local people before starting any project. A section of the local people are opposing the refinery on the grounds that it will adversely affect the fragile biodiversity of the coastal Konkan region and also affect their livelihood.

“Vedanta-Foxconn and Tata-Airbus are gone. Take this project to Gujarat and bring back good projects to Maharashtra.

Thackeray said similar protests had taken place during the construction of the Prosperity Highway when he was the chief minister.

“But we held talks with the protesters. We found a way out without obstructing the development.

Earlier, Thackeray had earlier planned to hold a rally in the Barsu-Solgaon area but permission was denied.

Officials said supporters of the refinery project have also organized a rally in the surrounding areas at the same time.
