Mulayam offers to Swatantra Dev to join SP, claims the party; Dev says Kalyan Singh had meeting to invite SP leader to condolence meeting

The Samajwadi Party has claimed that its leader Mulayam Singh Yadav had invited Uttar Pradesh BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh to join the SP in its meeting on Monday and later “neglected” Dalits and backwards in saffron. The SP was clearly “angry”. Team. However, Dev said on Tuesday that he had met Mulayam Singh to invite him to a condolence meeting for former chief minister Kalyan Singh.

After meeting Mulayam Singh Yadav at his residence here, the UP BJP chief had shared a picture of Yadav standing with Yadav on Twitter and said he inquired about the SP leader’s well being and sought his blessings. In a tweet hours after the meeting, SP’s digital media coordinator Manish Jagan Agarwal claimed that “Netaji (Mulayam) had offered Swatantra Dev Singh to join the Samajwadi Party”.

“It seems that Swatantra Dev Singh is troubled by the neglect of backwards and Dalits in the BJP. He may call it a courtesy call, but there is more to it.” Agarwal’s tweet was later retweeted by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, fueling speculation.

But Swatantra Dev said on Tuesday, “I met SP founder Mulayam Singh ji yesterday and invited him for a (tribute) meeting here. I also spoke to BSP supremo Mayawati ji and she has sent Satish (Chandra Mishra).

He was speaking at a condolence meeting organized in the state capital for Kalyan Singh, who was dumped by the Samajwadi Party. Dev said around 40 small parties were invited, of which 20-25 participated in the meeting.

Kalyan Singh died on 21 August. A Hindutva icon and OBC leader, he was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh when the Babri Masjid was demolished by ‘kar sevaks’ in Ayodhya in 1992.

The state BJP chief had last week attacked Mulayam’s son and SP supremo Akhilesh Yadav, saying he did not pay last respects to Kalyan Singh for fear of Muslim voters.

Swatantra Dev Singh had asked Akhilesh Yadav if he could hardly walk a kilometer from his residence to Mall Avenue to pay homage to the late leader. In a tweet in Hindi, he said, “Has the love of the Muslim vote bank deterred him from paying homage to the tallest leader of the backward class?”

However, hitting back at him, the SP had said that it was the “socialists” who stood by Kalyan Singh when he was sacked by the saffron party. Referring to the events in 1999, Samajwadi Party (SP) spokesperson Anurag Bhadauria had said, “When it comes to marketing programmes, the BJP should be a national or an international company. It was the BJP which sidelined Kalyan Singh. He was sacked by him. At that time, SP helped him and gave him due respect.”

Kalyan Singh had left the BJP and formed an alliance with SP Patron Mulayam Singh Yadav and launched his own organisation. However, this union lasted only a short time.
