Members of the Muslim community vandalized a madrasa in Assam’s Goalpara on Tuesday. A seminary teacher was arrested on charges of alleged links with al-Qaeda and two others were on the run. Officials allege that some of these have become strongholds of jihadist elements because of their allegiance to international terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda. The Goalpara demolition is the first instance of a madrasa being demolished by members of the minority community. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked residents to keep a watch on outsiders who could be terrorists in the form of Imams in mosques or teachers in madrassas. Since March, police have arrested around 40 people who are said to be members of al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent/Ansarullah Bangla Team, an offshoot of the terrorist organization. Most of them were reportedly posing as Imams or Madrasa teachers.
