Bangkok: myanmarA senior US diplomat said power was unlikely to defeat the rebels fighting his regime and democracy must be restored after seizing power last year.
“It’s hard to see today how they can really think they can win,” said Derek Cholet, state Department Consultant. “They are losing territory. Their army is taking serious losses.”
Speaking to Reuters and another journalist Bangkok On Friday, Cholet said the military government was falling apart not only internationally but also at home and that it should end the fighting and return to democracy.
Juna overthrew the elected government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021 and has since used deadly force and mass arrests to suppress demonstrations.
Responding to the call of a coalition of lightly armed insurgents to revolt the people, civilians have taken up arms to fight the police and soldiers. The junta has declared the coalition a “terrorist”.
An Army spokesman did not respond to a call seeking comment on Sunday about Cholet’s remarks.
Diplomats last month the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN,
Cholet said that in addition to imposing sanctions, Washington is working on ASEAN and Myanmar’s relationship with countries such as Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.
He expressed hope that China could also be “part of the solution” in Myanmar.
