“Naked Crepe” for Dosa: US Restaurant’s South Indian Menu Is a Shock

Plain Dosa is named as “Naked Crepe” and Masala Dosa as “Smashed Potato Crepe”.

“what’s in a name?” Shakespeare famously wrote. Quite a lot, if the discussion on Twitter is anything to go by. The micro-blogging site is brimming with opinions and messages after the menu of US-based Indian restaurant, Indian Crepe Company, was shared online.

According to a screenshot shared by a user, the eatery serves South Indian dishes like Idli and Dosa, but not under those names. Instead, everyone’s favorite Sambar Idli is named “Dunked Rice Cake Delight”. He is not everything. Sambhar Vada, another classic snack from South India, is what the restaurant named “Dunked Donut Delight”.

However, the names assigned to the humble dosa recipes garnered the most attention, with the plain dosa being named “Naked Crepe” and the Masala Dosa as “Smashed Potato Crepe”.

Selecting brevity, the user shared a screengrab of the menu with “Omfg” in the caption.

As new as the names may be, Twitter was not impressed.

A user removed pages from another restaurant’s menu and added it to the mix, which includes dishes like Mr. Spicy Crepe and Baby Cocktail Pancakes, which are dosa and uttapam dishes respectively.

Responding to the tweet, another said, ‘I am in pain.

“This is illegal,” declared some on the social media platform.

One comment said, “I know most non-desi people may not know what a dosa is, but if I can google what arancini is they can too.”
