Victor Osimhen said on Tuesday that he will remain available to play for Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations despite being currently out of action, recovering from a broken cheekbone. napoli Forward Osimhen was certain to be ruled out of the Continental tournament, which is set to begin on January 9, after initially being ruled out for three months following surgery on a facial fracture against Inter Milan in late November.

But the 22-year-old insisted he would be ready to travel to Cameroon with the Super Eagles.

“I will be available for AFCON until I am among the players selected to represent Nigeria,” Osimhen said on Twitter.

Osimhen is currently training for Napoli wearing a protective facemask and waiting to move on to resume play earlier than expected.

He suffered a fracture after a head-on collision with Inter defender Milan Scrianar, and had titanium implants in his cheekbones and eye sockets.

The Cup of Nations is gearing up for its debut next month against the backdrop of persistent rumors that it may be called off or postponed after already a year’s delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week Europe’s top clubs threatened to refuse to release their African players for the event due to concerns over COVID-19 health protocols.

Many of Africa’s key players are based at clubs in Europe, including Napoli’s Senegalese captain Kalidou Koulibaly and Cameroonian midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguisa.

On Sunday night, Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti described the Cup of Nations as an “invisible monster” that “makes your players disappear from the dressing room”.
