Nashik: For residents of Manmad, the glass has been half empty for 5 decades. Nashik News – Times of India

Manmad (NashikWelcoming guests with half a glass of water has become a way of life in this northern Maharashtra town over the past five decades, where having storage tanks, pumps and borewells is a top priority for residents who need at least one have to wait for. A fortnight to get its share from the civic authorities.
The year 2022 is no different for the 1.3 lakh residents of Manmad, the third largest urban area in Nashik district. Manmad Municipal Council (MMC) is supplying water to the residents once in every 12-15 days, adding to the woes of the residents struggling to beat the heat and the day temperature hovers around 41 degree Celsius. Is.
The frequency of water supply, however, varies depending on the stock of the Vaghadardi dam that stores water for the city. The Waghdardi dam gets water from Palkhed dam in Dindori through a reservoir in Patoda area 3A of Yeola taluka.
In all 15 wards of the city, once in 15 days, water is available on rotational basis. The gap is likely to widen, as load-shedding has started happening in the city for more than six hours every day. This will affect the supply from the filtration plant.
MMC chief officer Sachin Kumar Patel and municipal water department head Amrit Kajve admitted in TOI that residents were being supplied water for three-four hours once in 15 days. Patel said, “We are keen to bridge the gap. But it all depends on the availability of water at the Waghdardi dam.”
An MMC official said that every house in Manmad has a pump to dispense water supplied by the civic body. “Despite the fall in the water level in summer, residents also installed borewells. The MMC has 250 tube wells across the city,” the official said.
Manmad is in the rain shadow area and is dependent on Palkhed dam, from where the city receives about 25-30 mcft of water alternately after every three months.
A city visit revealed that every residential and commercial property has at least five-six overhead water storage tanks. Narrow lanes leading to numerous slums are blocked by such tanks, as residents cannot keep them on makeshift tin roofs.
“A large section of people working in banks and other organizations in Manmad prefer to travel from Nashik every day, they do not rent a house in Manmad due to water problem.” Water in Manmad is such a rarity Which welcomes the guests at home. “Half a glass of water is normal,” said Kalpesh Bedmutha, a local businessman and social activist.
It seems that the women of the city have become stoic. Taramati Bhadhe, 75, a resident of Pinjar Gali, said, “Getting water after every 12-15 days has become a way of life. We manage our daily activities with the water we store.”
“Our families do not attend social functions, including weddings, when the water supply is fixed,” said Meena Mansoori, who has lived in Manmad for a long time.
The aggrieved residents had formed the Manmad Bachao Action Committee in 2013 and filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court. That year, residents had access to water once every 55 days.
Ashok Pardeshi, head of the court, said, “The court took strong cognizance of the situation, after which the government woke up from sleep. But the lack of political will at the local level failed to put pressure on the government and solve the problem.” Manmad Bachao Action Committee “The dismal water scenario in Manmad has forced almost one-third of its residents to relocate to Nashik in the last few years,” he said.
The Manmad civic authorities attributed the hardship of the residents to several factors. “Vaghadardi dam does not have good stock during monsoon due to low rainfall. The leaking water pipeline, which is more than 30 years old, needs to be replaced. At least 20,000 liters of water is wasted every month due to the leak ,” said the officer.
He said, “Manmad Municipal Corporation had submitted a pipe replacement plan worth Rs 3 crore to the government for approval. However, approval is yet to come. One of the two filtration plants has a technical fault and may not be fully functional. is.”
