Aparna Balamurali lived it up as the feisty, strong and sympathetic beauty Bommi opposite Suriya in Sudha Kongara soararai potru(SP). It is a matter of pride for a natural actor to win the National Award for Best Actress for Bommi.

Says Aparna, “It was really great to get a National Award for a film I had worked hard for. The awards that the film has won in various categories shows the kind of work we have done in the film as a team.”

The hardest part of playing the architect-turned-actor, Bommy, was walking a tightrope to ensure that Bommy was neither too pushy nor preachy. Admitting that she took the time to understand the character and its story, Aparna recalls how the characterization had to be subtle yet strong. “It was extremely difficult to learn and speak the Madurai dialect like a native. Furthermore, Bommi was born and raised in a village in Madurai, yet dreams of running her own business, declines an offer and moves on with her life when people talk about her. were talking. To me, that was something really interesting about the character,” she explains.

In Tamil, his next film is Nitham Oru VanamiRaa Karthik’s directorial debut, in which he starred alongside Ashok Selvan, Ritu Varma and Shivatmika Rajasekhar.

“This is a beautiful story of a man trying to find his place. A feel good film with multiple stories within the main story and it is all about hope and how nothing is the end of the world,” says Aparna.

After the shoot of SP was over, Aparna took a break as she wanted people to see SP because “there was a process in the film which I have never experienced, at least not in my Malayalam films. I wanted the audience to notice the difference in the characterization. But then the pandemic struck and the break got longer. Not unnecessarily concerned about her hiatus from cinema, she says she has been able to carry the “process” she learned in SP to the other films she is starring in.

His evolution from Jimsey, his character in maheshinte pratikaram, in which he made his debut in cinema, in Bommi, included several films in which he made a mark with his spontaneity. She feels that until Bommi came along, she was happy that once I was given a script she was able to bring life to a character. As you continue to work, there is a tendency to develop a kind of template for the characters. I had to leave all that to Bommy and figure out how to get into a character’s skin, think like her, and breathe the air she lives in. After so many characters I learned in SP,” says Aparna.

“Thanks to the SP, I found that if you know your character really well, improvisation becomes easy too. You will probably think about his past, its influences… For example, in SP, in his family, Bommi’s brother gets all the positive attention, while they want to get married only for Bommi. Once you know your role, it becomes easy to create a backstory for the character.”
