The day was first celebrated in 1947 when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first home minister, addressed newly recruited civil servants at Metcalfe House in Delhi. In his motivational speech, he called civil servants the ‘Steel Frame of India’. In 2006, this day was officially declared as National Civil Service Day.
