National Youth Day: Why Vivekananda is considered a youth icon

January 12 is celebrated as National Youth Day which is also the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Born in 1863, his ideals have been a great source of inspiration for the Indian youth and hence his birth anniversary was declared as National Youth Day in 1985.

A great philosopher and monk, he was born Narendranath Datta in Kolkata, West Bengal. Vivekananda believed that it was only in selflessness and by trying to serve the greater humanity one could truly find Dharma and God. He also believed that patience and perseverance would help in overcoming all obstacles. He described patience and hard work as the only way to achieve success. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from Scottish Church College in 1884 and later from Presidency University.

Vivekananda joined the Brahmo Samaj movement at a very young age. He is credited with introducing the Indian philosophy of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. He also practiced meditation from a very young age. He believed that the secret of greatness was to have faith in oneself and in God.

“Take a thought. Make that one thought your life – think about it, dream it, live on that idea. Let the brain, the muscles, the nerves, every part of your body be filled with that thought, and leave every other thought alone. This is the road to success,” Vivekananda had said.

Apart from Vivekananda, APJ Adabul Kalam and Jawaharlal Nehru are also considered youth icons.

A P J Abdul Kalam: India’s Missile Man, Kalam taught that one needs to be courageous to think differently, explore the impossible and be successful in life. He had said, “My message, especially to the youth, is the courage to think differently, the courage to invent, the courage to walk the uncharted path, the courage to explore the impossible and overcome problems and succeed.” Be prepared for failure in their progress and whatever comes in life.

Jawahar Lal Nehru: The first Prime Minister of independent India, Nehru has been a popular figure among children and youth. He believed that success comes from inner strength and like Vivekananda and Kalam, he also said that to be successful one must be courageous and not be afraid of consequences. “Success often comes to those who dare to act. It seldom goes to the coward who is always afraid of the consequences,” Nehru had said.
