NCM issues warning to Indian students, apply to study medicine in China, as previous batches are yet to return

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently issued a notice regarding the admission to the MBBS programs in the university in China. The notice warns students applying for entry about the strict restrictions on visas for students from China. In addition, it has asked students to “do due diligence” to get education from the country.

It must be remembered here that earlier thousands of Indian students studying in China started a Twitter campaign with the hashtag #takeusbacktochina. They also reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to request the government’s intervention.

Thousands of Indians studying medicine in China came back to India in 2020 for their winter break and have been stranded since then. They could not go back to their colleges as the Covid-19 restrictions were imposed. However, China has not lifted the travel ban for students despite the reduction in the number of Kovid-19 cases in the country.

The NMC in its notice said that it has come to the notice of the Ministry of External Affairs that some universities in the People’s Republic of China have started issuing notices for MBBS admissions for the current and upcoming academic years.

NMC Secretary Dr Sandhya Bhullar said in the official, “In this context, any prospective student needs to know that the Government of the People’s Republic of China has imposed strict travel restrictions in the wake of COVID-19 and in November 2020 All visas have been suspended from Information.

It said, “A large number of international students including Indian students have not been able to return to China to continue their studies due to these restrictions. There has been no relaxation of restrictions so far. In addition, the Chinese authorities have already informed that the courses will be conducted online.”

“However, NMC does not recognize or sanction medical courses conducted by online mode only, as per extant rules,” read the notice.

Ms. Sandhya Bhullar further said that students are advised to refer to the FMGE Regulations before applying or planning to take admission in any institute in China/foreign institutions. The notice states that students are advised to be careful in choosing where to pursue medical education.
