Nirmala Sitharaman recently spent three days in Baramati as part of the BJP’s campaign campaign for the Lok Sabha elections.

NCP calls October 16 ‘absurd’ Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s ‘Rupee is not slipping’But the dollar strengthened’ remarks, and said that he should focus on his ministry instead of striving for BJP’s victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also said that protecting the country’s economy was Ms Sitharaman’s most important duty as finance minister.

During her ongoing visit to the US, Ms Sitharaman has said that the rupee has not weakened, but it is the dollar that has strengthened, and defended the eight per cent fall in the value of the Indian currency against the greenback this year.

Speaking to reporters in Washington DC after attending the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, he also said that the fundamentals of the Indian economy were strong and inflation was low compared to other parts of the world.

In a statement, NCP spokesperson Cylde Crasto alleged, “‘Rupee is not slipping, but dollar is strengthening’ is an absurd statement made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Making such statements should take care of our country’s economy. I will not hide the failure of his government.”

“He should focus more on looking after his ministry and less on trying to win Lok Sabha constituency for Bharatiya Janata Party in 2024. He should not forget that he is finance minister and his duty first is to protect India’s economy. Yes, he said.

Ms Sitharaman had recently spent three days in Baramati as part of the BJP’s campaign for the Lok Sabha elections. Baramati is the home ground of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, and the Lok Sabha seat is currently represented by Mr Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule.

Mr Crasto further said that Ms Sitharaman should refrain from making statements that are ridiculed.

The rupee on Friday closed at 82.35 against the US dollar, having touched another record low of 82.68 on Monday.
