Nearly half of SC, ST teaching posts vacant in central universities: Government data

Nearly half of the total posts reserved for faculty members from SC, ST communities are lying vacant in central universities of India. This information was given by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan while addressing a question in Lok Sabha.

Data shared by the education ministry shows that 1,015 teaching posts out of a total of 2,272 reserved for SC candidates in central universities are lying vacant, while 590 posts out of the total 1,154 reserved for ST candidates are yet to be filled. Huh.

The central law states that 27 per cent reservation is to be implemented for OBC category candidates in faculty posts, 15 per cent for Scheduled Castes and 7.5 per cent for Scheduled Tribe candidates. However, data shows that 562 SC posts and 152 ST posts are vacant in NITs (National Institutes of Technology) and 183 and 32 posts are reserved for SCs and STs respectively in IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology).

In IGNOU, 54 teaching posts reserved for SC category candidates are vacant, which together with 26 vacant ST posts accounts for about 45 per cent of the total 120 seats sanctioned for the category.

The data showed a similar trend for the Indian Institute of Information Technology where 63 per cent and 88 per cent teaching posts reserved for SC and ST category candidates were still vacant.

Earlier in August, the Union education ministry had asked around forty central universities such as IIMs and IITs to fill up around 6000 vacant teaching positions in “mission mode” by the end of October to bridge the teaching-learning gap. The Center had also directed the universities to share the status on filling backlog vacancies in a tabular format by including a separate chapter in the reports to be filed by the universities every year.
