Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has been ruled out of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham due to an injury sustained during the World Athletics Championships, according to a statement from the Indian Olympic Association. Neeraj, who won a silver medal with a throw of 88.13m in Oregon on Sunday, injured himself during his performance at the World Championships and will not be able to defend his Commonwealth Games gold medal.

“Team India javelin thrower Mr. Neeraj Chopra called me earlier today from the US to express his inability to participate in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games due to fitness concerns. Following his participation in the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Mr. Chopra was at the IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta said in a statement, “He had an MRI scan done on Monday and on the basis of this his medical team has advised him a month’s rest.”

Neeraj is also the current Olympic champion, having won a gold medal at the Tokyo Games last year.

Neeraj, who recently won a silver medal at the World Championships in Oregon, complained of a slight discomfort in his thigh after his fourth attempt in the final.

“After the fourth throw, I felt a little sore in my thigh, I wasn’t able to put that much effort. It was on my mind, but I just wanted to make sure I could throw. So I tightened my back Thighs. Hopefully it will be fine. I will know by morning whether it feels like or is there anything to worry about,” Neeraj had said.
