NEP 2020 will reshape India’s education policy as per global standards: Minister

New Delhi: Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Friday said that the National Policy on Education (NEP), 2020 will reshape India’s education policy as per global standards.

Addressing the PHDCCI Education Summit, 2022, Singh said, the NEP was the biggest path-breaking reform in India since independence as it is not only progressive and visionary but also takes care of the emerging needs and requirements of 21st century India. Keeping it in .

The Minister said that NEP 2020 gives priority to the inherent talent, knowledge, skill and aptitude of the students rather than focusing only on the degree. He said it gives ample space to young scholars and students to decide on their options based on their merit and their individual circumstances from time to time.

Elaborating on the merits of NEP-2020, Singh said, the provision of multiple entry/exit options should be nurtured as this academic flexibility can be exercised on the students concerned to avail different career opportunities at different times. will have a positive effect. on their internal education and inherent aptitude.

The minister said that the feasibility or suitability of this entry/exit option may also be considered for teachers in future, giving them career flexibility and up-gradation opportunities as is done in some western countries and the US.

The minister said, the policy advocates for creative and multi-disciplinary curriculum that includes humanities, languages, culture, sports and fitness, health and wellness, arts and crafts, besides science and mathematics.

Nearly 40 million Indians are pursuing higher education, which is higher than the figure for the United States and the European Union, and the ambitious new education policy seeks to double that number. He said that it is a big goal, but it can be achieved.

One of the most commendable opportunities arising out of NEP is the opportunity for universities and colleges to incorporate entrepreneurship in their curriculum. Singh said that if this is done in a meaningful way, it has the potential to give impetus to the country’s economy in a very short time.

He said that the NEP was launched to transform India’s education system through a multidisciplinary approach. As per the internal progress report of the Ministry of Education, with the completion of two years of the National Education Policy on 29 July 2022, 2,774 Innovative Councils have been set up in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in 28 states and six Union Territories (UTs) .

According to the report, 2,000 institutions in higher education are about to start as skill centers and out of these, 700 have registered on the common portal of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
