Netflix announces new ad-supported tier launch date

New Delhi: American subscription-based streaming service Netflix, which debuts in November, will finally roll out its new ad-supported tier in just a few bucks a month.

According to The Verge, the announcement is another sign that the once-disruptive upstart streaming service is slowly becoming a cable package by another name.

The company announced that its new Basic with Ads tier plan will be available on November 3, 2022 for US$6.99 in the US, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain and the US. United Kingdom.

The Basic with Ad plan gives subscribers access to a large portion of Netflix’s programming in exchange for users viewing an average of four to five minutes of commercials per hour, The Verge reported.

However, as a small selection of television shows will not be available in the full catalog and Netflix says it is currently in the works, movies will not be available for Basic with advertising subscribers due to licensing restrictions.

Each Netflix ad will last between 15 and 30 seconds and appear before and during programs. As The Verge reports, even Basic With Ads subscribers will not be able to download content to their devices and video quality will be limited to 720p/HD.

During a press conference announcing the new tier, Netflix described it as “pro-consumer” and explained how its internal content tagging teams were tasked with finding natural breakpoints in various shows and movies to place ads. went.

Netflix’s advertising comes in response to a sudden slowdown for the tiered streamer, which lost more than 1 million subscribers in the US and Canada earlier this year and has seen its stock price plummet in response to investor concerns. that its period of rapid growth has come to an end. , according to The Verge.
