“Never Past Your Prime”: The Internet Reacts As Brendan Fraser Wins Best Actor Oscar For ‘The Whale’

95th Academy Awards It opened on Monday at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. American actor Brendan Fraser, the heartthrob of the 90s who made a career comeback with his award season ‘whale‘, won the Oscar for Best Actor. In the film – directed by Darren Aronofsky and adapted from his own play by Samuel D Hunter – Mr Fraser stars as a morbidly obese teacher. He beat a field of contenders including Elvis’ Austin Butler and Banshee of Inishrin Colin Farrell.

Going on stage, an emotional Mister Fraser exclaimed, “So this is what the multiverse looks like!” He paid tribute to the film’s director Darren Aronofsky and writer Samuel Hunter. “You exposed your whale-shaped heart so that we could look into your soul,” he said. Mr Fraser ended his speech by touching on his early years in the industry.

“I started in this business 30 years ago,” he said. “Things didn’t come easily to me, but there was one convenience I didn’t appreciate until it took off,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Fraser has also received the Best Actor award. ‘whale’ at the Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards, and Best Actor nominations for the BAFTA and Golden Globes (for the film Drama). The film tells the poignant story of an obese, wheelchair-bound literature professor who tries to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter.
