Several states imposed new restrictions to check the rise of COVID-19 and Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the situation at a high-level meeting on Sunday as cases continued to rise to 1,79,723 new infections .

Most of the states and union territories including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi have already announced night curfew and others. COVID-19 restrictions in view of the impending third wave.

Tripura Night Curfew

Meanwhile, the Tripura government on Sunday decided to impose night curfew across the state from Monday to contain the spread of rising coronavirus cases. A notification said that the night curfew will be in force from 9 pm to 5 am for 10 days starting from Monday.

Himachal Pradesh new restrictions

The Himachal Pradesh government on Sunday imposed a ban on social and religious functions till January 24. According to an order, it also banned gatherings of more than 100 people for indoor and 300 for outdoor educational, sports, cultural and political events.

Staff attendance in state government offices was limited to 50 per cent. However, the restrictions will not apply to emergency services.

The Rajasthan government announced closure of schools in municipal areas till January 17, curfew on Sundays and market hours and restaurants and movie theaters to remain busy.

Tamil Nadu

A one-day complete lockdown was imposed across Tamil Nadu and there was silence on most roads and other public places. Suburban and other train operations, bus and other public transport services, including Metrorail, were suspended in Chennai.

Chief Minister MK Stalin had earlier ordered new restrictions, which included a statewide night curfew from 10 pm to 5 am, from January 6.

Puducherry Schools

Puducherry The government also announced that all schools conducting offline classes for students of classes 1 to 9 will remain closed from Monday.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that the state government will gradually impose restrictions on places of worship, including liquor shops, which attract crowds to control the coronavirus pandemic.

However, he added that as cases continue to rise, the demand for hospital beds and oxygen remains low.

On Saturday, when Maharashtra reported over 41,000 new COVID-19 cases, the state government decided to ban movement in public in groups of five or more from 5 am to 11 pm . Further, no movement in public shall be permitted from 11 am to 5 am, except for essential services, a government circular had said.

On Sunday, the state government revised COVID-19-related restrictions for gyms and beauty salons, allowing them to operate at 50 per cent capacity from January 11.

The state government has announced closure of schools and colleges till February 15. The government had also decided to cap attendance at marriages and social, religious, cultural or political functions at 50.

Delhi

In the national capital, which had a curfew over the weekend, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said there is no plan to extend the lockdown yet and there will be no need if people wear masks.

“The rising COVID-19 cases are a matter of concern but there is no need to panic. Very few people are getting hospitalized. Wearing a mask is very important,” he said.

The national capital has been witnessing a spurt in daily cases over the past few days, mainly due to the Omicron version of the infection.

According to the data updated by the Union Health Ministry at 8 am on Sunday, a total of 1,79,723 new coronavirus infections were reported.
