The fifth-gen C-Class will be offered with a pair of new 1.5-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines
Mercedes has unveiled its new C-Class in India Launch on 10th May, 2022. Now in its fifth generation, the new C-Class grew in size from its predecessor early last year and packing in even more technology. Recently bookings for the new C-Class are already underway with Mercedes starting local assembly of the model at its plant in Chakan, outside Pune.
The C-Class continues with Mercedes’ family design language now seen on the new S-Class and earlier E-Class. The cabin design is also largely inspired by the new S with portrait style central touchscreen, high-set central air-con vents and a free-standing digital instrument cluster. The new C-Class sits on a 25 mm longer wheelbase than its predecessor, with Mercedes saying it has freed up 21 mm of extra space along the cabin. The C-Class will be available with three interior color options – Macchiato Beige, Sienna Brown and Black paired with either open-pore wood trim with aluminum insert or metal wave trim.
However, it is the technology that will catch the eye of the buyers. The C-Class sports an 11.9-inch central touchscreen that runs on Mercedes’ latest MBUX system that comes complete with connected tech and voice assistant. In the case of the S-Class, the unit offers a degree of customization. The system also comes with a biometric scanner wherein users are able to save their personal profiles on board with a simple fingerprint scan. It ranges from personal access to data to setting up a personalized listening experience from the car speakers on the C 300d. The C 300d also gets Mercedes Digital Lights headlamps which are also included in the new S-Class.
Other comfort and convenience features include dual-zone climate control, rear center armrest, powered front seats, power adjust steering, a panoramic sunroof and a wireless phone charger at the front.
Coming to the engines, while the 2.0-litre petrol engine was used in the C200 in the previous generation, the new C-Class now gets a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit that produces a strong torque between 5800-6100 rpm and 300 Nm. Develops 201 bhp. Peak torque between 1800-4000 rpm. Diesel is a familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit in two states. In the C 220d it develops 197 bhp at 3600 rpm and 440 Nm of torque between 1800-2800 rpm while in the C 300d it develops 261 bhp at 4200 rpm and 550 Nm at 1800-2200 rpm. Additionally, all three engines are equipped with mild hybrid technology and have an integrated start generator that makes an additional 20 bhp and 200 Nm under hard acceleration.
A 9-speed automatic gearbox is standard across the range. Mercedes claims that the C 200 and C 220d have the same 0-100 kmph time of 7.3 seconds while the C 300d is claimed to be faster in 5.7 seconds.
Mercedes says that the C-Class will be available in six exterior colors – Celestine Grey, Mojave Silver, Hi-Tech Silver, Manufaktur Opalite White, Cavansite Blue and Obsidian Black. The C 200 and C 200d will be available in all six colors while the C 300d will be limited to the last three.
