Newborn baby girl rescued from garbage dump in Delhi Delhi News – Times of India

New Delhi: A newborn baby girl was rescued from a garbage dump in south-west Delhi, a hospital statement said on Saturday.
The girl was extremely weak and in a hypothermic state. According to doctors at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, he is currently undergoing treatment.
The child was traced from Harijan Basti in Rajokri village and the local police shifted him to the hospital’s emergency unit for treatment.
The hospital said two passersby discovered the child and informed the police.
It added that the baby is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in critical condition and is being assessed by doctors for any additional or underlying medical conditions.
A senior police officer said that on Saturday at 8.12 am, the police got information that a girl child was found lying in the garbage at Rajokri bus stand.
The police reached the spot and met the caller, who told that he saw a newborn baby girl of about 3 days old lying in a garbage dump near her house. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Manoj C said he called the police and took the girl home when it rained.
The girl was then handed over to the police and taken to Fortis Hospital, where she is undergoing first aid and her health is stable. The DCP said that further legal action is being taken as per the law.
A team of doctors led by Dr Rahul Nagpal, Director and Head, Department of Pediatrics took the child into their care.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the baby was born 24 to 48 hours earlier. When she was exposed to cold air, her skin turned blue and she weighed only 2 kg, less than the normal weight of a newborn, the statement said.
“The baby was drenched in rain, extremely weak and in a hypothermic condition associated with the umbilical cord. She was a premature baby and had a body temperature of 33°C, lower than the normal 36.4°C.
Dr. Nagpal said, “Our team revived him and wrapped him in warm clothes after cleaning him. He was shifted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.”
He said they are monitoring the oxygen saturation level, correcting and stabilizing his blood sugar.
He said, “We are doing some tests to know if he has any additional medical conditions or any brain damage. The child is responding to treatment which is a good sign.”
The villagers told that they were going for a morning walk when they saw the girl lying in a pile of garbage.
“We immediately informed the local police, who brought the newborn to Fortis Vasant Kunj. We would be happy to adopt the child, if possible after he recovers,” he said.
