Newly enrolled government school students denied textbooks, uniforms

This is because the private schools they attended are yet to issue transfer certificates

Thousands of students who switched from private schools to government schools this academic year are still not getting their textbooks and uniforms, while some are not even getting their mid-day meals. This is because when they switched during the pandemic, private school managements are refusing to issue transfer certificates.

An official of the Public Education Department said that thousands of students across the state have faced hardships because of this. While these students have started attending classes in government schools, they are still listed in the Student Achievement Tracking System (SATS) as enrolled in private schools and hence cannot get textbooks, uniforms and mid-day meals. Used to be. “If we try to register the child once again, the system says there is a double mistake,” the official said.

The headmaster of a government high school said that his school in Bengaluru has seen an increase in enrollment and 20 new students have been admitted. “Out of 20 students, 12 were earlier studying in private schools but they were not issued transfer certificates. While we are providing them mid-day meals, we are unable to issue uniforms and textbooks as these students are not enrolled in the SATS database under our school,” he said.

a question of fee

D. Shashi Kumar, general secretary of Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka, said private schools were not issuing TCs as parents had not paid their dues for the last two academic years. “Many people have refused to pay for the online classes that their children attended. This is a gross injustice and if the parents do not pay, the school management will suffer a huge loss.

Public Education Commissioner R. Vishal acknowledged the problem and said that it would be resolved on a case by case basis. “We will ensure that the students are not denied mid-day meal,” he said.
