NH 907A gets new rolling barrier guardrail under pilot project

New rolling barrier guardrail deployed on Nahan to Kumarhatti section of NH 907A in Himachal Pradesh

India has got its first rolling barrier guardrail set-up under a pilot project in Himachal Pradesh. Barrier has been put up on NH 907A between Nahan and Kumarhatti to reduce the accidental deaths on hill roads. Road and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced this on Twitter.

Rolling Barrier Guardrail Barrier is not a very new technology, Australia-based KSI Global first tested the technology in 2014 and ETI, a South Korean company, shared details of tests conducted on a similar rolling barrier guardrail in 2016. Concept of Rolling Barrier Guardrails are designed to reduce and deflect the force of impact which in turn will reduce the potential for fatal injuries, while taking the full force of impact against stable obstacles.

The rotational speeds of the individual rollers are designed to reduce the impact force of the vehicle as well as try to prevent the vehicle from rolling over in the after-impact lanes of traffic. Taking to Twitter, Gadkari said the pilot project will be a real-world test of how the technology will impact road safety on a stretch of national highway whose primary use is to reduce deaths on mountain roads. If successful, we may see more of these along other hilly sections of national highways across the country.
