Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen tested positive ahead of Africa Cup of Nations

Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen is in isolation after testing positive for the coronavirus for the second time, his club side Napoli announced on Thursday with the Africa Cup of Nations kicking off in just over a week.

The 23-year-old, who is still recovering from surgery after suffering a cheekbone injury against Inter Milan in late November, was tested on Friday before traveling to Italy for a check-up.

Osimhen also tested positive for Covid last January after returning from the Christmas holidays in Nigeria.

“Victor Osimhen has tested positive for Covid-19 but is asymptomatic,” Serie A team Napoli said in a statement, “where the player is currently.

“As a result, local authorities have ordered that Osimhen self-isolate and check-ups will be rescheduled after he tests negative and his isolation period ends.”

Osimhene was training for Napoli wearing a protective face mask and was waiting to return to action earlier than expected, after initially being out for three months.

He seemed certain to miss the Cup of Nations starting in Cameroon on 9 January, but was included in the national team.
