Nike gives head office staff one week off to make “mental health a priority”

The world has changed in more ways than one after the COVID-19 pandemic. The need to focus on the mental and physical well-being of people is being addressed by government agencies and private organizations around the world. A notable example of this is that sneaker and apparel giant Nike has honored employees at its head office in Oregon for a week’s break before returning to office in September.

The purpose of the week off work is to give employees the opportunity to “destroy”. Explaining the intent behind the initiative, Matt Marazzo, Nike’s senior manager of global marketing science, said it was “the right thing to do.”

In a post shared on LinkedIn, Mr. Marazzo wrote, “In about an hour, the Nike teams will start shutting down their laptops for our regular Summer Friday hours. But today is a little more special. Next up. Nike is also closing headquarters for a full week starting Monday.”

“All our senior leaders are sending a clear message: Take time to unwind, declutter and spend time with your loved ones. Don’t work,” said Mr. Marazzo.

He said it was the need of the hour, noting that we all went through a “painful incident”. “This past year has been pretty bad – we are all human and living through a traumatic event! – but I hope the empathy and grace we continue to show our peers will continue to be positive on the work culture going forward. There will be an impact,” Mr Marazzo said.

“It’s not just a “week off” for the team… it’s an acknowledgment that we can prioritize mental health and still work,” he said at the end of the note, “of our people.” Support. It’s good business but it’s also the right thing to do.”

The people present on the stage appreciated this initiative.
