The Bidar police have booked nine people for entering the Mahmood Gawan Madrasa, a heritage site in the northern Karnataka city, and offering prayers during the Dussehra festival in the early hours of Thursday. A strong police force was also deployed around the ASI protected site in the old city area to prevent any untoward incident.

According to eyewitnesses, during the Bhavani Devi procession, nine people, who were part of a large group, worshiped in the presence of the police. After the video of the puja went viral, some people from the local Muslim community demonstrated in front of the town police station demanding action. After persuasion by Additional Superintendent of Police Mahesh Meghnavar and Circle Inspector Satish, the protesters dispersed and appropriate action would be taken.

Later, following a complaint by a person named Syed Mubashir Ali, the Bazar police registered an FIR against Naresh Gauli, Prakash, Vinoo, Manna, Sagar Bunty, Jagdish Gauli, Arun Gauli, Gorakh Gauli and one other person.

All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi took to Twitter to hit out at the ruling BJP over the incident, shared a video of the puja being performed and tagged Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Bidar police.
