Nio plans to build more than 5,000 battery swapping stations by 2025

Nio, which started operations in Norway last year, has now launched a battery swap station, the first of its kind in the European continent. The battery swap station is in Norway, but they want 20 more such facilities by the end of 2022.

The second generation Power Swap Station 2.0 was first introduced in April 2021 which has 14 battery slots and an empty slot to take a discharged battery. The battery swap stations will support the Nio ES8, which was launched in the market last year. These stations will also support future Nio products.

With 700 stations nationwide, Nio is a leader in battery swapping technology in China. It plans to set up 4,000 stations worldwide including 1,000 outside China by the end of 2025.

Nio will likely launch a battery swap station in Germany as well, which is currently the largest EV market in Europe. These can also be installed at shell stations.

Due to its battery swap service, Nio is able to offer its cars in a battery as a service model where customers buy a car without a battery and then pay a monthly subscription to the battery and battery swap network.

In fact, Nio reports that 92 percent of its customers opt for a battery as a service business model out of 200 Nio registered on the market today. It is also strong when it comes to charging technology with the Nio branded fast charger at 150 kW.
