IIT-Madras has once again been ranked as the best higher education institution in India. The top two positions in the NIRF list remain the same as last year. Despite the increasing number of colleges applying for the national ranking, Top slots booked by similar institutions over the past few years. The top two slots are books by IIT-Madras and IISc Bengaluru from 2019. IISc was at the top followed by IIT-Madras at the second position in 2018.
Last year, the list was dominated by various IITs, which secured seven out of the top 15 spots in the rankings. This year, there are seven IITs in the top 8 institutes, including the top ranks in the overall category, several ranks in the engineering category and management categories, as well as those secured by the IITs. This is outside the scope of their engineering or technical courses and is a step towards being interdisciplinary.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled it On National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2021 The rankings were released in a virtual event on 9 September. The ranking listed the best educational institutions in India in ten categories- Overall, Universities, Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy, Management, Architecture, Law.

The ranking list in the overall category is prepared on the basis of the performance of institutions in criteria such as teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, outreach and inclusivity, peer perception and graduation outcomes.
NIRF was introduced in 2015 with the aim of taking pride in the nationalized ranking standards for higher education institutions in the country. The first ranking was released mainly in four categories based on subjects. The list of categories was further increased to eight in the year 2019 and NIRF also introduced a comprehensive list of institutes.
