Nirjala Ekadashi 2022: Date, Muhurta and Significance

Nirjala Ekadashi usually falls on the 11th lunar day of the waxing fortnight in the month of Jyeshtha according to the Hindu calendar. There are 24 Ekadashi in a year and Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most important and holy. Nirjala means without water and on this day devotees keep fast without even taking a drop of water. Ekadashi fast is observed to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

This year, according to the Panchang, the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi will be kept on June 10. Ekadashi Tithi will start on 10th June at 7:25 am and will continue till 5:45 am on 11th June.

Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi

According to Hindu beliefs, fasting on the day of Nirjala Ekadashi gives you the benefits of fasting for all Ekadashis in a year. If you cannot fast for all the 24 Ekadashis in a year then you should observe only one Nirjala Ekadashi fast and the benefits will be same.

It is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi because of a legend related to Bhima, the second brother of Pandavas mentioned in the epic Mahabharata. Known for his insatiable hunger, Bhima could not fast on all the 24 Ekadashi days of the year, while all his other brothers were fasting.

He was upset as he was not able to control his hunger during Ekadashi days and it was considered as an insult to Lord Vishnu. Hence, he approached Maharishi Vyas to find a solution to it.

The famous saint advised him to observe fast only on Nirjala Ekadashi and this would give him the same benefit of fasting on all 24 Ekadashi days in a year. Since Bhima also observed a fast on this day, Nirjala Ekadashi is known as Bhimaseni Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi.
