No coercive action against Suvendu Adhikari: Calcutta High Court

Calcutta High Court on Monday granted interim relief to the Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari By directing that no coercive action be taken against him and that the state should take leave of the court before arresting him. The court stayed the investigation in three of the five cases filed against the BJP leader.

The cases in which the court granted him relief include the ‘unnatural’ death of his security guard in 2018. He was summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department of the police to appear in the case. He refused to appear in front of the agency during the day.

A division bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha first stayed the investigation into the case registered in Contai, as well as one involved in a political clash in Nandigram, and another in the case of snatching of gold chains in Panskura – all three places in Purva Medinipur district. .

The court said the investigation may continue in two other cases, one in Maniktala, an alleged job scam in Kolkata and another in which Mr. Adhikari allegedly threatened a police officer during a political meeting in Kolkata, the court said.
