Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra hopes to cross the coveted 90m mark this year, but he doesn’t want to think about “distance” at the World Athletics Championships, which is currently underway in Eugene, USA. Chopra had set a new national record of 89.94m on her way to a silver medal at the prestigious Diamond League in Stockholm last month, just 6cm shy of the 90m mark, the gold standard in the world of javelin throw. The 24-year-old finished second behind Granada’s Anderson Peters, who recorded a best throw of 90.31m.
Chopra said, “I was 6 cms short of the 90m mark, I was pretty close. I hope to cross 90m this year. But I never think or focus on the distance going in a competition I just try to give my 100 percent.” A virtual conversation with Eugene after he was named as a partner to represent the Under Armor brand by Underdog Athletics.
A strong ground awaits for Chopra at the World Championships, where he will be seen in action, starting with the qualifiers on July 21.
In addition, Chopra and Peters, Olympic silver medalist Jakob Wadlage of the Czech Republic, Oliver Hellender of Finland and the German pair of Julian Weber and Johannes Vetter will be in action.

“This is the biggest competition of the year for me. I want to perform without any pressure. This is the biggest stage, the competition will be very tough. There are 5-6 throwers who are performing consistently so the level is the same this year said Chopra.
“But every day, every competition is different. My focus is on just one thing – throwing as big as possible.”
