A report by a panel of doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said that the treatment given to late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was “as per correct medical practice and no error has been found in the care provided”.
This has brought relief to Apollo Hospital where Jayalalithaa was admitted.
With the direction of the Supreme Court, the AIIMS Panel was formed to assist the Arumughaswamy Commission.
The panel found that Jayalalithaa’s final diagnosis and timing of health events were fully observed and also agreed with Apollo’s treatment and diagnosis.
After Jayalalithaa’s demise in December 2016, there was an all-out politics over the cause of her death and the medical procedures performed during her hospitalization.
Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam had requested an inquiry into his death which led to the formation of the Arumughaswamy Commission.
The Arumughaswamy Commission began its probe in November 2017 with several hearings of Jayalalithaa’s close aides and doctors providing treatment, Vijayabhakar, the then Tamil Nadu health minister, Radhakrishnan, the then health secretary, Tamil Nadu’s then finance minister and senior AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam. .
More than 157 witnesses related to Jayalalithaa appeared before the Arumughaswamy Commission and made their point.
In 2019, Apollo Hospitals moved the Madras High Court seeking an interim stay on the probe panel’s proceedings.
The petition claimed that the inquiry panel had gone beyond the scope of its terms and references and acted partly to reduce the liability on Apollo Hospitals. The Madras High Court dismissed the petition of Apollo Hospitals on the objections of the Commission of Inquiry.
Subsequently, Apollo appealed to the Supreme Court against the order of the Madras High Court, following which the Supreme Court ordered AIIMS to set up a medical board to assist the Arumughaswamy Commission to understand the medical treatment provided to Jayalalithaa. .
Based on medical records, a final diagnosis of bacterial and septic shock was made with respiratory infection.
There was also evidence of heart failure. He had uncontrolled diabetes at the time of admission, which was treated. He also had a history of hypertension, hyperthyroidism, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome and atopic dermatitis and the AIIMS medical panel has said it “agree with the final diagnosis”.
