‘No need to worry, no need to prove myself’: Virat Kohli expresses concern over fall in form

For someone who was running fast towards Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 100 international hundreds a while back, alarm bells should now sound for a drought that lasted more than two years. But Virat Kohli, who has amassed 70 hundreds since his century against Bangladesh in November 2019, is nothing to worry about.

On and off the field, Kohli has been on the rise in recent times. He has publicly refuted the BCCI’s official line, calling his resignation from his post as T20I captain not performing up to the standards set for him and South Africa due to a back spasm. He has missed the second Test of the ongoing series against U.S.A. – a fitness issue that has troubled him in the past as well.

However, Kohli is not worried about it.

“This is not the first time. Let’s not get carried away with reality, it has happened (lean patches) many times,” India’s Test captain said on Monday, confirming that he is fit and ready for the third Test series starting Tuesday. I will return to lead the team.

“I don’t see myself as the outside world sees me. The standards to which I am compared are set by myself. More than anyone else, I am proud of the fact that I want to do my best for the team. Sometimes things in sports are not the way you want them to be, but I realize that I have been involved in very important moments in the past year or so as a batsman.

Kohli, who has 7854 runs in 98 Tests, including 27 centuries and as many fifties, says he doesn’t need to prove it to anyone but understands that he is in a position where judgments from the ‘outside world’ will be taken.

“After all, those moments have been important. Sometimes your focal point changes, you’ll never be happy if you keep looking at yourself in terms of numbers. I take so much pride and inspiration to live in those moments and There is nothing to worry. I really believe that I don’t need to prove myself to anyone. When you are in this situation you are judged by the outside world.”
