‘No seats for Members of Parliament’: Why former minister Harsh Vardhan walked out of Delhi Lt Governor’s swearing-in

Congress social media in-charge Rohan Gupta shared a video on his Twitter handle in which an angry Vardhan was seen exiting the event saying, “I will write to Vinay Kumar Saxena ji that this is the arrangement.”

“They haven’t even provided any seats for Members of Parliament,” he was heard saying, “What happened, sir?”. Addressing the media after the function, Saxena did not comment when asked about it.

Bardhan. The former Union health minister who represents the Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituency was not immediately available for his comments.

There was no immediate response from the LG office on the issue.

After taking oath, Saxena said that he would act as the local guardian of the city and not as the Lieutenant Governor. Saxena (64), who was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Vipin Sanghi, said, “I want to tell the people of Delhi that I will act as a local guardian and not as a lieutenant governor. “

“I will be more visible on the streets than Raj Niwas,” he told the media. Raj Niwas is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues, Union ministers Giriraj Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, Delhi MPs and MLAs and top bureaucrats of the city government attended the ceremony. North East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari and West Delhi MP Parvesh Verma were seen sitting in the back rows of sofas for the dignitaries.

Kejriwal said his government will work closely with the new Lt Governor as it did with his predecessor Anil Baijal.

Saxena, who held the post of chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on May 23. His predecessor Anil Baijal had resigned as LG on May 18 citing personal reasons. Saxena is an alumnus of Kanpur University with a pilot’s license.

In March 2021, he was appointed as a member of the National Committee by the Central Government to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence. In November 2020, he was named as a member of the Padma Awards selection panel for 2021.
