Noida tower collapses, residents’ evening celebration today

The residents of Noida’s Emerald Court Housing Society have planned a meeting today

New Delhi:

The residents of Noida’s Emerald Court Housing Society have planned a celebration today to mark their legal victory against the realtor, supertect and the demolition of the twin towers tomorrow.

NDTV spoke to Aarti Kappula, a member of the Resident Welfare Association of the housing society in Sector 93A, Noida, this morning.

Asked if there were any plans to celebrate the victory in the nine-year legal battle, at the end of which the towers were demolished on grounds of illegality, Ms. Kappula said, “Of course, we have planned it this evening. We are going to get together for a while. The fight is definitely won. This is an example for the whole country.”

With the demolition carried out, the next challenge for the Noida administration is to ensure that the mountain of debris left behind is cleared at the earliest.

Views of the site show cleaners at work today, scraping a layer of dust from the ground near the site where the Twin Towers stood as of 2.30 pm yesterday.

Officials associated with the operation had earlier said that around 55,000 tonnes of debris would be generated. It may take up to three months to remove the debris. The waste will be dumped at designated places.

The society’s residents had moved the court, arguing that realtor Supertech had built the twin towers in an area that was to be built in a garden in the original building plan. He argued that the realtor violated norms to sell more flats and increase profit margins.

The realtor later revised the building plan to include two more towers with 24 floors each. This has been approved by the authorities. In a later plan, the number of storeys was increased to 40.

The matter reached the Supreme Court, which found that the realtor had violated the building rules in connivance with the Noida authorities. The court last year ordered the demolition of the two towers at the realtor’s expense.
