The royal head of Sikkim was the top gate 2022 and secured AIR 1 in Mathematics (MA). The 23-year-old, who appeared for GATE for the second attempt, does not aim for a job in a PSU like most of the candidates and instead wants to pursue a PhD or research in mathematics. Royal who has completed MSc in Mathematics from Sikkim University and a Bachelor’s degree from IIT Guwahati; Now aiming to pursue PhD in Mathematics from IISc Bangalore or Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIRF).
When asked about his preparation, Royal laughed and said, “I never thought that I would top the exam so didn’t prepare well for it.” During a telephonic interview with News18.com, he said, “My goal was not to crack GATE. I prepared myself for the exam mostly, taking help from YouTube classes and other online platforms. It was only towards the end.” It was when I joined a coaching for GATE.”
Royal says that his GATE exam went well, so he wanted to know the score for sure. “When I got the information that GATE 2022 results were out, I went online to check my scorecard. I had the shock of my life when I saw my scorecard and I topped.”
During its previous attempt at GATE, Royal had secured AIR 215.
When asked about the preparation for the GATE exam, he said. “I didn’t have a fixed schedule for my studies, but I remember that some days I used to completely immerse myself in studies and study all day.”

Giving a tip to other GATE aspirants, he said, “Clear your basics. If your basics are not clear then it does not matter how much you have studied. Work on your basics and then move on to other things.”
Royal, who lives with his mother in his hometown, says he used the lockdown to study properly. “I am glad that I got this tremendous support, especially from my mother, who has sacrificed a lot to bring me here,” he says. He said that his teachers also helped him a lot in reaching here.
