Baker, 54, coached Djokovic for three years from December 2013.

“(I) just got heartbroken, I mean, for him,” Djokovic said ahead of the Madrid Open in Spain on Sunday. “He’s a friend, a long time friend, a coach for three, four years, who I consider close in my life and has contributed greatly to my success in my career.”

Baker was sentenced on Friday after pleading guilty on April 8 to four charges under Britain’s Insolvency Act. The three-time Wimbledon champion was found to have transferred hundreds of thousands of pounds (dollars) from his business account to other accounts after a June 2017 bankruptcy.

Djokovic, the 20-time Grand Slam winner, said he would not comment on the details of Baker’s court case.

“I just hope he goes through the period that he has to be in prison and when he comes out, you know, being able to live his life, I don’t know if we’ll use the word ‘normal’ or No,’ because life is definitely changing,” Djokovic said. “I just pray for him. I hope things go well in terms of his health, his mental health, because that will be the most challenging part.”

Djokovic is looking to return to full form in Madrid ahead of the French Open later this month.
